Dental Technician Jobs
Dental Technicians (or Dental Technologists) work ‘behind the scenes’ in dental laboratory settings. They work as part of a team, and generally don't have direct contact with patients. They play an important technical, hands-on role making appliances, prescribed by the Dentist or Dental Prosthetist, which help to improve a patient’s appearance, speech and ability to chew. Dental Technicians have a good understanding of dental material science and digital design. They use a range of materials and techniques to build and repair dental appliances, such as dentures, crowns, bridges and dental braces. Most Dental Technician jobs require applicants to have a Diploma of Dental Technology and experience. Many roles specialise in certain technologies and dental applications.
Dental hygienists work as part of dentist-led teams, performing preventive dental procedures, such as teeth cleaning, while also giving education and advice. They work in collaboration with the Dentist, providing routine dental care, which allows the Dentist more time for advanced procedures and consultations. Dental Hygienists complete either a 2-year Advanced Diploma of Oral Health (Dental Hygiene), or a bachelor's degree in Dental Hygiene or Oral Health.
