Dental Roles

Dentistry is the field of health care concerned with the health, treatment and management of the teeth and oral cavity. Oral health can affect eating and nutrition, having a healthy smile, and the ability to communicate, and is key to overall health and wellbeing. Dental services are provided by Dentists, specialist Dentists and other members of the dental team (Dental Assistants, Hygienists, and Therapists) in private practices, hospitals and community settings. Other technical dentistry services are provided by Prosthetists and teams of Dental Technicians in dental laboratories.

Dental Prosthetist Jobs

Dental Prosthetists, like Dental Technicians, design, construct and repair dental appliances and devices – such as dentures, overdentures, crowns, mouthguards, splints/nightguards, and sleep apnoea/anti-snoring devices. However, extra training gives them the ability to work autonomously with patients, or as part of the wider dental team. They can provide diagnostic and preventative services to patients, take measurements, and make molds and impressions of the mouth and teeth to construct new appliances in the Dental Laboratory. Dental Prosthetists may manage a laboratory and team of dental technicians. They can refer patients to Dental Specialists for further diagnosis and treatment. Dental Prosthetists complete an Advanced Diploma in Dental Prosthetics (after the Diploma of Dental Technology) or a Bachelor's degree in Dental Technology and Dental Prosthetics.
